The tax power of Wallonia
Wallonia has a broad fiscal autonomy in personal income tax, regional taxes, as well as regional levies and charges.
WFE supports the Government and SPW Finances (Wallonia Public Service – Finance) in drawing up and implementing Wallonia’s tax policy. This includes, among other things:
- Drafting regional tax legislation and regulations
- Monitoring draft and existing legislation, in Belgium and abroad, that may affect the exercise of the Region’s tax powers
- Monitoring the application of the Special Law of 16 January 1989 on the financing of the Communities and Regions
- Analysing the tax status of the Region and Walloon institutions
- Analysing the Region’s tax revenue and tax expenditure
We help ensure that the Region and the Walloon institutions that request our support comply with their legal financial and tax obligations.
We contribute to protecting and safeguarding the Region’s interests in financial and tax matters.
We coordinate contacts between the Region and the Walloon institutions that request our support, and the federal and local tax authorities that administer taxes and levies payable by the Region or those institutions.
WFE provides the secretariat for the Walloon Tax and Finance Council.
WFE chairs and provides the secretariat for the Expert Committee on Strengthening Tax Justice and Fairness.
