Our missions
Wallonie Finances Expertises was established by the Arrêté du Gouvernement wallon (Order of the Walloon Government) of 25 April 2024.
WFE supports and advises the Walloon Government, the Wallonia Public Service, and Public Administration Units across the following three key areas:
Budget steering
Budget steering ensures that Wallonia’s budget and accounts remain aligned with the public finance trajectory set by the Government. The trajectory must safeguard the sustainability of the Region’s public finances while complying with Belgium’s commitments and the rules of European macroeconomic governance.
In this context, WFE acts as the designated partner of the Walloon Government, the Wallonia Public Service and public administration units for budgetary, accounting and financial analysis, monitoring, investment policy and horizon scanning.
WFE provides the secretariat for the Budget Monitoring Committee.
Public debt
Wallonia’s public debt is the total amount of borrowings raised to cover any annual gap between the entity’s revenues and expenditures. When a deficit arises, borrowing becomes necessary in order to secure the financial resources needed to implement regional policy.
Wallonie Finances Expertises oversees the overall financing of Wallonia’s public debt, in line with the directives of the Walloon Minister responsible for Budget and Finance and in compliance with the recommendations of the Regional Treasury Council (CORET).
WFE is also responsible for managing Wallonia’s short-term and long-term investments.
Tax strategy
Wallonia has a broad fiscal autonomy in relation to personal income tax, regional taxes, and regional levies and charges.
WFE supports the Government and SPW Finances (Wallonia Public Service – Finance) in drawing up and implementing Wallonia’s tax policy.
Our history
WFE has existed since 1 January 2024. Created by the Walloon Government at the initiative of the Minister for Budget and Finance, WFE is a key player in Wallonia’s budgetary governance. Its creation forms part of a broader set of initiatives aimed at ensuring the sustainability of Wallonia’s public finances.
WFE brings together the expertise from four teams that existed before its creation and already worked closely together:
WFE took over the longstanding responsibilities of these four teams, to which is now added the coordination of the spending review process.
